My thoughts about SOPA/PIPA
That is a scary thought really, to give private organizations the right to shut down websites because they do as much as link to copyrighted material. It’s scary really. It’s kind of like selling the rights to uphold the law.
The scariest part is that we already have a law like that in Sweden. Fortunately for most of the Swedish people, nobody cares about that law (It’s like the law that we are not allowed to cross a road walking as long as the red walk sign is lighted – the law is there, but there is no punishment if you break it… unless there are small children watching… and someone can prove there actually was small children walking and the red warning sign was lit)… But really, for us in Sweden it is illegal to link to music videos on YouTube and stuff like that. I’m not kidding, it’s illegal. It’s actually not even legal to send an email to a friend linking to a nice vid on YouTube (but no one will check if you do…). It’s illegal to link to videos on Facebook or Twitter too… That is exposing copyrighted material to a public forum.. and that is not allowed… fortunately… no one cares as long as it’s not an organized system.
There is no punishment for e-mailing a link to copyrighted material to a friend, unless the government starts checking peoples email… and they actually have all rights to do that too. We were cheated of our private life some years ago…
However… trust me people of America… YOU DON’T WANT THIS! You really don’t want to have dangerous laws restricting the freedom on the internet for you, just for the sake of some organizations trying to make an extra buck…
That is not the world the previous generations fought for…
Well, we also pay some extra money for each storage media we buy since it can be used to store copyrighted material… If you do it or not, it doesn’t matter… we all pay for it anyway. In short, in Sweden we do not have much privacy and we are not trusted enough to have storage media without being suspected for diverse illegal actions. It’s like owning a gun and being automatically suspected for murder…but still… most of the time, no one cares about upholding those moronic laws (except the paying extra for storage media part).
